Starch Medical Inc. (SMI) was founded in 2007 and is a privately held San Jose, California based medical device company engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of absorbable hemostatic products. SMI has an independent distribution network for the sale of SealFoam® Absorbable Polysaccharide Hemostat and RESPONDER® Polysaccharide Hemostat.   SealFoam® and RESPONDER® are CE marked.


In 2010, SMI completed a licensing agreement with CryoLife, Inc. for the worldwide sales of the PerClot® Polysaccharide Hemostatic System for use in open and laparoscopic surgical procedures.

AMP® is the Absorbable Modified Polymers technology platform that consists of biocompatible, ultra-hydrophilic polymer particles synthesized from purified plant starch.  AMP® materials contain no human or animal components.  SealFoam, Responder and PerClot all incorporate the AMP® technology.

SealFoam® Absorbable Polysaccharide Hemostat is a plant based absorbable hemostat which is delivered to the sterile field in a double barrier tray.  Lyophilized and pliable, SealFoam® is a wafer-like pad which may be trimmed to suit the surgical procedure.  SealFoam® is indicated for a diverse range of press-and-release applications and unique wound contours.

Responder® Polysaccharide Hemostat is a topical hemostat synthesized from a purified plant polymer.  Responder® is specifically formulated for combat, trauma, and emergency situations. Responder® particles are water soluble and can be dissolved simply by water or saline rinses.  Responder® is intended for the treatment of bleeding wounds including cuts, lacerations, burns and other traumatic injuries.
